March: Marcel Duchamp
March brought our attention to French artist, Marcel Duchamp. An extremely impactful artist, Duchamp challenged ideas of what was "acceptable" art. Most famous for his readymades, many would say Duchamp kick-started Modern Art. ICA Middle School Artists made work inspired by two of his pieces. First, the 7th grade focused on his painting, Nude Descending a Staircase of 1912. The 8th and 9th graders made work inspired by his sculpture, With Hidden Noise (1916). Both works are shown below along with the stand-out pieces created during March.
7th grade: Betty W.
8th grade: David W.
9th grade: Nick H. (Youtube.com video)

Because of two shortened months, artist Georgia O'Keeffe got TWO months on our Artist of the Month board! She definitely deserves the honor because of her incredible paintings and what she did to advance the cause for women artists in the 20th century. Called the 'Mother of American Modernism', O'Keeffe is recognized as one of the premier painters of the last 100 years.
